Sorcerers are mocked by the other Magi of the world. They lack diversity. They lack adaptability. They lack any kind of extensive knowledge of the art they wield. But that is not always the case. A sorcerous adept defies the stereotypical mold, training his mind to seek new spells and abilities rather than more raw power. To such an individual, the trade off is worth the price.

Virtually any accomplished sorcerer has the ability to pursue the sorcerous adept. Even some bards pursue the path. It is such that some only pursue it for a brief time for the advantages of more spells, and then continue on their normal course thereafter. Regardless, the versatility is invaluable for them, granting them the one thing they lack — more spells.

Hit Dice: d4.

Requirements

To qualify to become a sorcerous adept, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Knowledge (arcana): 5 ranks.
Spellcraft: 5 ranks.
Spellcasting: Must be able to spontaneously cast 2nd level arcane spells (as a sorcerer or bard does).

Class Skills

The sorcerous adept’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Alchemy (Int), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Profession (Wis), Scry (Int), and Spellcraft (Int). See Chapter 4: Skills in the Player’s Handbook for skill descriptions.

Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The sorcerous adept is proficient in no additional weapons or armor.

Spells Per Day: For every two levels of sorcerous adept that are gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in the arcane spontaneous-casting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spontaneously-casting class before becoming a sorcerous adept, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Focused Mind (Ex): A sorcerous adept gains a bonus to Concentration equal to his sorcerous adept levels. In addition, he always has the option to take 10 when making a Concentration check, even if the situation would normally not allow him to do so.

Metamagic Feat: At 2nd, 6th, and 10th level, the sorcerous adept gains one free metamagic feat.

Bonus Spells: When a sorcerous adept reaches 3rd level, he adds bonus spells to his list of spells known. These are selected from his normal spell list as if he had gained more spells from level advancement. These bonus spells can only be selected from spell levels that the sorcerous adept can already cast. Once his bonus spells are chosen, they cannot be exchanged.
At 3rd level, the sorcerous adept chooses 2 bonus spells. He selects an additional 3 bonus spells at 5th level, and again at 7th level. At 9th level, he selects 4 bonus spells.

Sorcerous Metamagic (Su): Upon reaching 4th level, the sorcerous adept gains a deeper understanding of metamagic techniques. Whenever he adds metamagic to his spellcasting, it no longer suffers the extended casting time that normal metamagic has when being cast by a sorcerer.

Improved Metamagic (Su): At 10th level, a sorcerous adept further improves his mastery over metamagic techniques, allowing him to expend less arcane energy to wield them. Whenever he adds metamagic to his spells, he reduces the spell level increase by one. He cannot reduce the level increase lower than one level.
This allows him to cast a quickened spell that only increases the spell's cost by three levels, and an empowered spell that increases the cost by one level. He cannot, however, reduce the cost of an extended spell.
